British 10K London Run on behalf of the Children’s charity CHICKS

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

National Children's charity CHICKS (Country Holiday for Inner City Kids) is asking for runners to join their team for the British10K London Run on Sunday 11th July 2010. CHICKS have provided hundreds of disadvantaged children from London, Kent and surrounding areas with a respite break at their retreats in Devon & Cornwall. CHICKS plan to give free breaks to 1,200 children per year in 2010 but as the charity receives no government funding, events like the British 10K London Run play a big part in funding the respite breaks.

CHICKS volunteer, Sarah Hill, from Wrotham in Kent said, "Having both volunteered for CHICKS and run the Asics London 10K for the first time last year, I was determined to do both again this year. Combining the two just made sense, and adds an extra motivation for me to beat my time in the run! I am really looking forward to the race this year, and hope to share my triumph when I return to volunteering a few weeks later, allowing me to really appreciate the difference I am helping to make to some Children's lives."

CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids) is a registered charity. CHICKS' camps run from March to December and we have now supported 7,000 children since the charity began in 1992 - a landmark we are all very proud of!

The children CHICKS care for come from a variety of backgrounds. Many have been abused, live in poverty, or have been neglected. Others live in care or are themselves young carers, often bearing the extraordinary responsibility of caring for disabled or terminally ill relatives. What they have in common is the desperate need to create some positive childhood memories, to be listened to, and to have the kind of fun that all children deserve. Each year, hundreds of children spend 6 days at one of the CHICKS ‘retreats' in Devon and Cornwall, both centres are places where the children can run free and be completely safe. Every child gets the total attention of their fully trained supervisors, and are made to feel cared for and valued.

If you would like to join our team and help raise money for this very worthy cause or if you work with disadvantaged children who could benefit from a free respite break, please contact fundraiser Mick Ryan on 01822 811020 or e-mail mick@chicks.org.uk
