Creating Inner Peace and Safety
You see, whenever you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, or thinking negatively, the body releases the natural stress hormones of Adrenaline and Cortisol which travel through all our vital organs and systems. They're part of the ‘flight or fight' mechanism (FoFM) which is automatically triggered when we react to threat or emergency. The trouble is, our bodies think there's an emergency when we have money worries or meeting deadlines or dealing with computers crashing etc! And if stress has become part of your everyday living, you're activating the FoFM regularly which can cause physical problems like digestive disorders, heart disease and high blood pressure.
So, if you sometimes get overwhelmed and stressed out and wish you could find a bit of peace and tranquillity, here's something you can do. And doesn't involve booking a holiday on some remote island in the Pacific! All you need is your imagination.....
Close your eyes and start thinking of all the really beautiful places you've visited that made you feel good and bring them back to mind. I'm talking about places that filled you with joy, lightness and a sense of peace. It might be a place you knew as a child, or somewhere in the country or by the sea or a holiday location you really love.
Pick one place which you particularly like and start thinking about being back there. Recall the scenery, the time of day, and what the weather was like. Think about the colours around you. Remember what you were wearing. Above all, think about how it made you feel. Recollect everything about this place in as much detail and intensity as possible and hold those feelings for as long as you can - even if it's only for five minutes.
You could do this on the train or the bus to or from work if you like. You don't have to go and shut yourself away in a room somewhere. But if you can't find the time to try this technique during the day, then do it at night before you go to sleep!
This kind of work is so easy, even a child could manage it. Practice it regularly, and you'll be doing something very beneficial for yourself. You'll be flooding yourself with a different kind of hormone called Endorphins which are released anytime you engage in a pleasurable activity, and they're very, very healing.
So, go through your memories, pick out a selection of special places and choose different ones to visit every day. If you find you have a favourite, visit it as often as you can. Let it become your safe haven, your refuge, your sanctuary - a place where you can retreat to when the going gets tough. Enjoy it and relish the space it gives you!
