A lifetime of adventure in just one night
More than 400 guests will be treated to 15 talks from some of the finest adventurers on the face of the planet during the inaugural ‘A Night of Adventure' event at the Vue Cinema in London's Leicester Square on May 17.
Topics will range from rowing oceans to trekking to the South Pole and rafting the length of the Amazon to cycling round the world. There will also be tales from less conventional adventurers, including a man who skateboarded across Australia, another who lived in a tree house for year and a blind man who flew a micro light from London to Sydney.
Each speaker will be limited to just 20 slides, shown on the enormous cinema screen, to accompany their tales. The challenge for the speakers is that each slide will scroll forward automatically after just 20 seconds.
All proceeds raised on the night will go to the international children's charity Hope and Homes for Children.
The event's organiser is Al Humphreys - a 33-year-old Yorkshireman who in 2005 became the first man to cycle non-stop around the globe.
Al said: "The speakers at ‘A Night of Adventure' may have travelled the world several times over and found themselves in some pretty hairy situations along the way, but their talks on May 17 could well be their biggest challenge to date.
"Once they begin there is no stopping or turning back - it's fast and furious and extremely stressful for the speaker."
"The audience must be ready to be swept from adventure to adventure with only their beer and popcorn to steady their nerves."
Tickets to the event must be purchased in advance and are on sale now for just £20.
The price includes admission to the cinema's VIP lounge and bar, as well as a free raffle ticket.
Al said the event aims to celebrate the spirit of adventure in all its guises and hopefully raise lots of money for Hope and Homes for Children.
"Most of the speakers at ‘A Night of Adventure' have travelled the world and along the way they have inevitably witnessed both the best and worst aspects of human nature," said Al.
"In societies where things spiral out of control, often children are the victims and that's where charity's like Hope and Homes for Children come in."
"It's a world leader in transforming harmful and outdated childcare practices in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa, so ‘A Night of Adventure' can think of no better cause to support."
"All the money raised through the event will help children grow up in loving families in their own countries by closing orphanages, preventing child abandonment and keeping together families at risk of breakdown due to the pressures of poverty, disease and conflict."
Doors to ‘A Night of Adventure' open at 6.30pm, with the first talk starting at 7pm.
