A Spring Clean for all Seasons
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle, light touch massage used to treat and control different types of lymphoedema or swelling of an arm, leg or other part of the body due to an abnormal build-up of a fluid called lymph in the body tissues.
MLD uses a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the excess fluid into an area with a working lymph vessel system. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels and helps move excess fluid away from the swollen area so that it can drain away normally.
MLD encourages the body to naturally detox which results in clearer skin, a reduction in puffiness around tired eyes and improved skin tone. It is also used to improve acne and other skin conditions, strengthen the immune system, relieve fluid congestion, promote healing of ligaments and sprains as well as scarring.
Dee Jones, founding member of MLDUK, top MLD therapist and trainer comments: “MLD’s intensely relaxing effect masks the strength of the treatment itself and clients may visit the bathroom more regularly after a treatment as the body begins to detox. MLD is a safe and effective therapy when practiced by a fully qualified therapist or an MLDUK member, so always check credentials beforehand.
Free to download from MLDUK’s website - www.mlduk.org.uk - the Detox mini guide outlines the benefits of MLD, how to find a qualified therapist and what to expect when you go for a treatment. The website features background on the therapy and a searchable database of qualified MLD practitioners in the UK. MLDUK can also be contacted on 0844 800 1988.
Case Studies
Anne Marie Fraser, from Redcar, is an enthusiastic advocate of MLD and its positive health benefits. “The MLD massage leaves me feeling relaxed, clear headed and full of energy,” she said. “I drink lots of water after a treatment to increase the detox effect it has on my system and feel so fantastic afterwards that I try and fit one or two sessions in every week if I can.”
Sue Kirby from Derbyshire initially had MLD to reduce swelling around her eyes after cosmetic surgery. Once the swelling had subsided, however, she continued to have regular MLD massage. “My face looked great after each treatment – less puffy and more defined – just like I’d had a face lift without the surgery!” she explained.“I’m thrilled with the results of MLD and I’d definitely recommend people have a treatment as part of their beauty prep before a big party or ball as it makes such a difference and gives you a real lift and glow,” Sue enthuses. “In fact someone once told me that models have MLD before a photo shoot for that very reason. If it’s good enough for super models, surely everyone should experience the benefits of MLD for themselves!”
